HAIR LOSS TREATMENT

Treatment of Baldness

Alopecia or baldness is a set of disorders which involves the state of lacking hair where it would normally grow, particularly on the head. Male pattern baldness, a progressive hair thinning condition is the most common form of baldness. Androgenic alopecia is another name for this condition and it indicates the effect of hormones on this condition in adult human. The severity and nature of baldness can vary greatly; it could be seen in male and female (male and female pattern baldness), alopecia areata[Pic], which involves the local loss of hair in head and body, alopecia totalis, which involves the loss of hair in head, and the most sever form alopecia unversalis, which involves the loss of hair from head to toe.

Medical treatment for alopecia has had limited success. This is important since male pattern baldness is thought to occur in over sixty percent of adult male at some point in their lives. Male pattern baldness is characterized by hair receding from both sides of the forehead. Receding hairline or receding brow is always progressive.

Male Pattern Baldness

Male pattern baldness (MPB), is a common phenomenon and a combination of hormonal and genetic factors seem to play a role, although the exact mechanism is not known[Pic]. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a powerful sex hormone, is the trigger for this type of baldness. The mechanism of this is not fully understood yet. DHT will cause hair miniaturization in genetically-prone people. The progress of this phenomenon will cause decrease of hair shaft until scalp hair become very tiny, which is called vellus hair or else become non-existent. Hair loss can begins as early as end of puberty. Hamilton-Norwood (I-VIII) scale is used for classification of male pattern baldness.

Female Pattern Baldness

Female pattern baldness (FPB) is less common and present differently than male pattern baldness[Pic]. The common presentation of FPB is diffuse tinning of hair or broadening of the mid-line parting of the hair. The exact mechanism is not known, although a hormonal influence has been suggested. Since FPB has a different presentation, a different classification system (Ludwig scale I-III) is used to characterize the severity of baldness for women.
